Medtronic raises fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by robust demand for heart devices and strategic investments.

Medtronic has announced an upward revision of its fiscal 2027 financial forecasts, attributing the change to increased demand for its heart devices. The company has also made significant investments in heart-valve repair and robotic surgery technology, aiming to strengthen its position in the medical devices market.

Increased Demand for Heart Devices

The medical technology giant has raised its revenue growth outlook for fiscal 2027, projecting annual organic growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, an increase from the previously anticipated range of 6.75% to 7.25%. Additionally, the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast has been increased to $5.94, up from $5.90, while the upper end remains at $6. This optimistic forecast is supported by a strong performance across Medtronic's various business sectors, particularly in cardiovascular procedures.

Strategic Investments in Innovation

Medtronic is investing $80 million in Pi-Cardia, a company specializing in heart-valve repair devices, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. The company has also committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device outside the U.S. According to CEO Geoff Martha, these investments align with Medtronic's strategy to focus on high-growth medical technology segments with large patient populations.

“We've had a steady cadence of M&A, prioritizing higher growth segments of medtech that we are confident will become significant segments,” Martha stated. He also highlighted the complementary nature of Cornerstone's Sentire device with Medtronic's Hugo robotic system, especially in emerging markets where the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery remains below 1%.

Financial Performance and Market Response

Medtronic's cardiovascular segment experienced a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was primarily driven by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an 88% surge. The company reported an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on $9.76 billion in revenue, surpassing analyst expectations of $1.39 per share and $9.55 billion in sales, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Medtronic's financial chief Thierry Pieton noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly covered the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into future financial outlooks.
