Medtronic Elevates 2027 Forecasts Amid Surge in Heart Device Demand

Medtronic raises fiscal 2027 revenue outlook, driven by robust heart device demand and strategic investments.
Medtronic has increased its fiscal 2027 revenue growth projections, buoyed by strong demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The medical device giant now anticipates annual organic revenue growth to fall between 7.25% and 7.75%, an upward revision from its previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Strategic Investments and Market Expansion
The company announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device manufacturer, with an option to acquire it for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States. Medtronic CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the potential of the company's strategic acquisitions to penetrate emerging markets, where soft tissue robotic surgery remains less than 1%.
"We've maintained a steady pace of mergers and acquisitions, prioritizing high-growth segments of medtech with large patient pools," Martha stated during a post-earnings call. He further highlighted that the company's confidence stems from consistent performance across its business units and the increasing contributions from newer growth platforms.
Financial Performance and Future Outlook
Medtronic's cardiovascular segment experienced a significant boost, with quarterly sales rising by 19.5% to $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by the company's pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an 88% increase in demand. The company reported an adjusted quarterly per share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analysts' expectations of $1.39 on $9.55 billion sales, according to LSEG data.
Financial Chief Thierry Pieton noted that Medtronic received tariff refunds that nearly covered the duties paid during the quarter. However, these refunds have not been factored into future forecasts. The company has raised the lower end of its fiscal 2027 adjusted per share profit forecast to $5.94 from $5.90, with the upper end remaining at $6.
Market Dynamics and Industry Trends
The medical technology sector, including firms like Medtronic, continues to benefit from the adoption of advanced technologies and growing demand for surgical procedures. The company's strategic focus on high-growth, large-segment areas within medtech is expected to sustain its upward trajectory.
With a robust pipeline and strategic investments, Medtronic is poised to capitalize on the increasing need for innovative cardiovascular solutions, positioning itself as a leader in the evolving medical device landscape.
