Medtronic Elevates 2027 Forecasts Amid Robust Heart Device Demand

Medtronic has increased its fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by strong demand for heart devices and strategic investments in Pi-Cardia and Cornerstone Robotics.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 financial projections upward, citing heightened demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company has raised the lower end of its adjusted per share profit forecast to $5.94 from the previous $5.90, maintaining the upper limit at $6. This adjustment reflects a more optimistic outlook, with anticipated annual organic revenue growth now between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from the earlier estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Strategic Investments and Market Expansion
To bolster its position in the medical devices market, Medtronic announced significant investments, including $80 million in heart-valve repair device maker Pi-Cardia, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select international markets. CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the complementary nature of Cornerstone's Sentire device to Medtronic's Hugo device, particularly in emerging markets where robotic surgery penetration remains below 1%.
Performance Driven by Cardiovascular Innovations
The company reported a robust 19.5% increase in quarterly sales within its cardiovascular segment, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was significantly driven by Medtronic's pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% surge. The broader adoption of such advanced technologies has been pivotal in Medtronic's enhanced financial outlook.
During a post-earnings call, CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the broad performance across Medtronic's business segments and the increasing contributions from newer growth platforms. He noted, "What gives us confidence is not simply the strength of the quarter, but importantly, the breadth of performance across our businesses and the increasing contributions from newer growth platforms."
Financial Outcomes and Future Prospects
For the quarter, Medtronic reported an adjusted per share profit of $1.45 on revenues of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales, according to LSEG-compiled data. The company's financial chief, Thierry Pieton, mentioned that tariff refunds nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, although future refunds are not factored into the current outlook.
These strategic moves and financial results underscore Medtronic's focus on high-growth segments of the medtech industry with significant patient pools. As the company continues to capitalize on strong market demand and strategic investments, it positions itself for sustained growth in the coming years.
