AI Summary

Medtronic raises fiscal 2027 revenue outlook, fueled by robust heart device sales and strategic investments.

Medtronic has increased its fiscal 2027 revenue growth predictions, attributing the boost to heightened demand for its cardiovascular devices. The company anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from its previous forecast of 6.75% to 7.25%. The lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast has also been raised to $5.94, while the upper limit remains at $6.

Strategic Investments and Acquisitions

In a move to strengthen its market position, Medtronic announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a company specializing in heart-valve repair devices. The deal includes an option to acquire Pi-Cardia for $210 million. Additionally, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.

CEO Geoff Martha highlighted the company's strategic focus on high-growth segments within the medtech industry, emphasizing the potential of large patient pools and emerging markets. He noted that the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery in developing regions is currently less than 1%, indicating significant growth opportunities.

Financial Performance and Market Dynamics

Medtronic's cardiovascular segment reported a notable 19.5% surge in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which saw an impressive 88% increase. The company achieved an adjusted quarterly per-share profit of $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales according to LSEG-compiled data.

Medtech companies, including Medtronic, are benefiting from a broader adoption of innovative technologies and a rise in surgical procedures. Martha expressed confidence in the company's diverse business performance and the contributions from new growth platforms during a recent earnings call.

Despite these positive developments, Medtronic's financial outlook does not account for potential future tariff refunds. According to CFO Thierry Pieton, the company received tariff refunds during the quarter that almost offset the duties it had paid.
