Medtronic Elevates 2027 Forecasts Amid Heart Device Surge

Medtronic raises fiscal 2027 forecasts, driven by strong demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic has adjusted its fiscal 2027 financial outlook upwards, driven by robust demand for its heart devices used in complex cardiovascular procedures. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from its previous projection of 6.75% to 7.25%. Additionally, the lower end of its adjusted per-share profit forecast has been increased to $5.94 from $5.90, with the upper end remaining at $6.
Strategic Investments in Medical Technology
Medtronic is bolstering its portfolio with significant investments. The company announced an $80 million investment in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, along with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic has invested $700 million in Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States. CEO Geoff Martha emphasized the strategic focus on high-growth segments within medtech, citing the potential for large patient pools.
Financial Performance and Market Dynamics
The company's cardiovascular segment saw a 19.5% increase in quarterly sales, reaching $3.93 billion. This growth was largely driven by its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which experienced an 88% surge. For the quarter, Medtronic reported an adjusted per-share profit of $1.45 on $9.76 billion in revenue, surpassing estimates of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in revenue, according to LSEG data.
Medtronic's Chief Financial Officer Thierry Pieton noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, future refunds have not been factored into the company's outlook. The firm's confidence in its revised forecasts stems not only from recent strong quarterly performance but also from the broad success across its various business units and the contributions from newer growth platforms.
With a steady cadence of mergers and acquisitions, Medtronic continues to prioritize areas within the medical technology sector that promise high growth and significant market potential. This strategic focus aligns with the company's goal to expand its reach and enhance its offerings in the global healthcare landscape.
