Medtronic Elevates 2027 Forecasts Amid Heart Device Demand Surge

Medtronic raises fiscal 2027 outlook, driven by high demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
In a strategic move reflecting robust demand for its cardiovascular products, Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 revenue growth outlook upwards, buoyed by strong performance in its heart devices segment. The medical technology giant announced an increase in its projected annual organic revenue growth to between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from its previous estimate of 6.75% to 7.25%.
Investments and Acquisitions
Alongside its optimistic forecast, Medtronic revealed plans to invest $80 million in heart-valve repair device maker Pi-Cardia, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Additionally, the company has committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing rights to distribute a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States. These investments highlight Medtronic's strategy to expand its footprint in high-growth segments of the medtech industry.
Geoff Martha, Medtronic's CEO, emphasized the company's focus on segments with large patient pools and significant growth potential. "We've had a steady cadence of mergers and acquisitions, prioritizing high-growth areas that are expected to become substantial markets," Martha said in a post-earnings call.
Financial Performance and Revenue Drivers
Medtronic's financial results for the quarter exceeded expectations, with adjusted earnings per share at $1.45 on revenue of $9.76 billion, surpassing analyst predictions of $1.39 earnings per share on $9.55 billion in revenue. The company's cardiovascular segment saw a 19.5% increase in sales, reaching $3.93 billion, largely driven by an 88% surge in its pulsed field ablation portfolio, which is utilized in treating irregular heart rhythms.
Thierry Pieton, Medtronic's Chief Financial Officer, noted that the company received tariff refunds that nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter. However, these potential future refunds have not been factored into the company's outlook.
Market Outlook
Medtronic's strategic investments and revised forecasts come as the medtech sector experiences heightened adoption of advanced technologies and increasing demand for surgical procedures. Martha highlighted the importance of new growth platforms in driving the company's performance across various business units.
The company remains well-positioned to capitalize on emerging opportunities in the medtech industry, particularly in regions where the penetration of soft tissue robotic surgery remains low, such as in emerging markets. Medtronic's collaboration with Cornerstone Robotics, featuring the Sentire device, complements its existing Hugo robotic platform, further solidifying its presence in the global surgical robotics market.
