Medtronic Elevates 2027 Forecast Amid Surging Heart Device Demand

Medtronic boosts fiscal 2027 outlook, fueled by rising demand for heart devices and strategic investments.
Medtronic has revised its fiscal 2027 forecasts upwards, citing robust demand for its cardiovascular devices. The company's updated projections reflect confidence in its growing heart device portfolio, particularly those used in complex cardiovascular procedures.
Strategic Investments and Revenue Growth
In addition to raising its revenue growth expectations, Medtronic announced significant investments aimed at bolstering its market position. The firm is set to invest $80 million in Pi-Cardia, a heart-valve repair device maker, with an option to acquire the company for $210 million. Furthermore, Medtronic has committed $700 million to Cornerstone Robotics, securing distribution rights for a robotic surgical device in select markets outside the United States.
Medtronic's CEO, Geoff Martha, emphasized the company's strategic focus on high-growth segments within the medtech industry. "We've had a steady cadence of M&A, prioritizing segments with large patient pools," Martha stated. The company's confidence is further bolstered by a strong quarterly performance, with cardiovascular segment sales rising 19.5% to $3.93 billion, largely driven by an 88% increase in its pulsed field ablation portfolio.
Financial Outlook and Market Performance
Medtronic has adjusted the lower end of its fiscal 2027 adjusted per-share profit forecast from $5.90 to $5.94, maintaining the upper limit at $6. The company now anticipates annual organic revenue growth between 7.25% and 7.75%, up from the previously projected 6.75% to 7.25% range. This optimistic outlook is underpinned by a strong quarter, where Medtronic reported an adjusted per-share profit of $1.45 on $9.76 billion in revenue, surpassing expectations of $1.39 per share on $9.55 billion in sales.
Thierry Pieton, Medtronic's finance chief, noted that tariff refunds nearly offset the duties paid during the quarter, although these refunds have not been factored into future projections. The company's strategic investments and solid financial performance highlight its commitment to capitalizing on emerging opportunities in the medtech sector.
Medtronic's recent moves reflect a broader industry trend, where medtech firms are experiencing heightened adoption of advanced technologies alongside strong surgical demand. With its focus on innovation and strategic acquisitions, Medtronic aims to maintain its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.
