Abhay Soi discusses the potential impact of a proposed price cap on private hospital room rates, emphasizing the need for investment-friendly policies.

Abhay Soi, Chairman of Max Healthcare, has voiced concerns over a proposed price cap on private hospital room rents, arguing that such measures could hinder the growth and investment in the healthcare sector. Speaking during Max Healthcare's earnings call, Soi highlighted the necessity of balancing affordability with the need for new hospital beds and viable investment opportunities.

Price Cap Controversy

The proposal, part of a report by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare, suggests that room rates in private hospitals should not exceed the average tariffs of nearby three-star hotels. Soi cautioned that while affordability is crucial, it should not overshadow the sector's need for capital to expand and improve healthcare infrastructure.

"The sector requires substantial investment, and we need an environment that encourages this," Soi stated. He expressed confidence that the Ministry of Health would consider these factors, ensuring a balanced approach that supports both affordability and sector growth.

Expansion Plans Unaffected

Despite the proposal, Max Healthcare remains committed to its expansion plans. Soi emphasized the organization’s efficiency in healthcare delivery, suggesting that any new investment opportunities arising from the policy could benefit Max Healthcare. "We are focused on providing top-tier healthcare and believe we can achieve superior returns," he noted.

Soi also remarked that policies should target the average needs rather than the extremes, positioning Max Healthcare as an outlier in terms of operational efficiency.

Hospital Admission Protocols

On another note, Soi addressed recent guidelines from the General Insurance Council (GIC) aimed at reducing unnecessary hospital admissions. He clarified that admission decisions should be made by doctors in conjunction with insurance providers, not hospitals. "Hospitals provide the infrastructure and services, but the decision to admit a patient lies with the clinician," Soi asserted.

His comments follow concerns from the Association of Healthcare Providers (India) about the potential misuse of these guidelines by insurers to deny claims. Soi indicated that any standardization of admission protocols should involve agreement with the Indian Medical Association (IMA).
