Manipal Health Enterprises saw a 10.7% surge on its market debut, valuing the hospital chain at $9 billion.

Manipal Health Enterprises, a prominent player in India's healthcare sector, made a striking entry into the stock market on Wednesday, achieving a valuation of approximately $9.03 billion. The company's shares rose by as much as 10.7% to 653.10 rupees on the National Stock Exchange of India, significantly above the issue price of 590 rupees. This debut marks India's second-largest initial public offering (IPO) of the year, following SBI Funds Management's listing in July.

Strong Market Response to Manipal's IPO

The robust performance of Manipal Health's IPO highlights a healthy appetite among investors for the healthcare sector, driven by a burgeoning demand for specialized medical services in India. The hospital chain, backed by Singapore's Temasek Holdings, operates over 13,000 beds across 49 hospitals, making it the country's largest multispecialty hospital network.

Shivani Nyati, head of wealth at Swastika Investmart, commented on the IPO's success, stating that while the listing reflects strong investor demand, the high valuation may limit immediate gains. She advised existing investors to hold their shares, while suggesting that new investors might benefit from waiting for more favorable entry points or further debt reduction before buying.

Expansion Plans Amidst Growing Competition

Manipal Health has ambitious plans to expand its operations, with a proposal to invest 40 billion rupees to increase its bed capacity by over 18% in the coming years. This expansion aims to add 2,400 beds within three to four years, further strengthening its position in the market.

The healthcare sector in India is seeing an influx of private and foreign investments from major players like Blackstone, Novo Nordisk, and KKR. This trend is expected to fuel growth and innovation within the industry, as more companies look to capitalize on the rising demand for healthcare services.

Competitive Landscape and Market Valuation

As Manipal Health sets its sights on expansion, it faces competition from other major hospital chains, including Apollo Hospitals, which currently has around 10,000 beds and aims to expand to 13,000 beds by fiscal 2030. Apollo's market capitalization stands at approximately 1.3 trillion rupees, while Max Healthcare and Fortis Healthcare have market caps of 1.04 trillion rupees and 704.22 billion rupees, respectively.

According to brokerage Angel One, Manipal Health's valuation stands at 84.65 times its fiscal 2026 earnings at the upper end of the IPO price band of 560 to 590 rupees. In comparison, its competitors Apollo, Fortis, and Max Healthcare are valued between 66.15x and 74.55x.

The successful market debut of Manipal Health underscores the growing investor confidence in the Indian healthcare sector, driven by the increasing need for specialized medical services and the sector's potential for substantial growth.
