Lilavati Hospital Announces International Expansion with Kazakhstan OPD

Lilavati Hospital, a prominent healthcare institution based in Mumbai, is set to expand its footprint internationally by opening a super-speciality outpatient department (OPD) in Almaty, Kazakhstan. This marks the hospital's first venture outside India, with the facility expected to commence operations in early September.

The new OPD will provide a range of services including oncology, liver and hepatobiliary treatments, kidney transplantation, cardiac sciences, neurology and neurosurgery, as well as IVF and reproductive medicine. This initiative aims to bring Lilavati Hospital's medical expertise and specialist consultations closer to patients in Central Asia. For cases requiring advanced treatment and surgeries, patients will be referred to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai.

Strategic Expansion Plans

Dr. Ravindra Karanjekar, CEO of Lilavati Hospital, highlighted that this expansion is a strategic move to establish an international presence, starting with Kazakhstan. The hospital is also exploring opportunities in other Central Asian countries such as Uzbekistan, Oman, Mauritius, and Sri Lanka. These expansions could involve various partnerships, including brownfield and greenfield projects, as well as collaborations with local governments.

Domestically, Lilavati Hospital is also on a growth trajectory, with plans to inaugurate a new 300-bed cancer care facility in Ahmedabad and additional projects in Indore and New Delhi. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to add 3,000 beds to the hospital's portfolio over the next five years.

No Private Equity Involvement

While specific details regarding the investment and partnership nature for the Kazakhstan OPD have not been disclosed, it has been confirmed that no private equity investment is involved in the project.

Dr. Karanjekar explained the timing of the expansion, stating, "We wanted to stabilize ourselves first. Once we stabilized our business in India, we began looking at opportunities both within the country and overseas. International business can be challenging, but it is also a long-term opportunity."

This move is part of Lilavati Hospital's broader vision to enhance its service offerings and reach, both within India and internationally, by leveraging its established brand and medical expertise.
