Kolhapur's CPR Hospital to Launch State's First Govt BMT Facility

Kolhapur's Chhatrapati Pramila Raje (CPR) Civil Hospital is on the brink of a significant medical advancement with the opening of Maharashtra's first state-run bone marrow transplant (BMT) facility. Scheduled to be operational next month, this initiative aims to provide accessible and affordable treatment for patients suffering from blood cancer and other hematological disorders.

## Addressing a Critical Need
Bone marrow is a crucial tissue within bones, responsible for producing red and white blood cells. These cells are vital for oxygen transportation and infection defense, respectively. Blood cancer disrupts this production process, necessitating a bone marrow transplant in about 50% of cases. However, the prohibitive costs of such procedures in private hospitals, ranging from Rs20 lakh to Rs25 lakh, have left many patients without viable treatment options.

## Financial Accessibility
Dr. Varun Bafna, a hematologist at CPR Hospital, highlighted the facility's commitment to affordability through government insurance schemes. Under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, the cost for a fully matched bone marrow transplant is covered up to Rs10 lakh, while partially matched transplants receive coverage up to Rs17 lakh. This financial support is critical, especially given the rising incidence of blood cancers in Kolhapur, where nearly 10,000 patients are affected.

## Enhancing Medical Infrastructure
The CPR Hospital has already set the stage for this new facility with its existing hematology day care unit, which manages thalassemia, hemophilia, and sickle cell disease. The addition of the BMT unit is expected to significantly bolster the hospital's capacity to treat severe blood disorders. The state government has approved Rs8.40 crore for specialized drugs and resources required for these treatments.

While the exact causes of blood cancer remain complex, doctors at the facility emphasize the importance of early detection. Regular platelet counts, hemoglobin tests, and lymphoid checks are crucial for timely diagnosis. Despite the inherent risks associated with bone marrow transplants, medical experts assert that successful procedures can fully cure blood cancer.
