iOncology.ai: India's AI Platform for Cancer Care Gains BRICS Spotlight

At the recent BRICS Summit, India's iOncology.ai, an artificial intelligence platform designed to enhance cancer care, was prominently featured in a special edition of the BRICS Health Journal. Developed collaboratively by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune, the platform is supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

Innovative Approach to Cancer Care

iOncology.ai aims to integrate diverse cancer-related clinical data, facilitating early detection, risk assessment, and comprehensive treatment planning. The platform is also designed to support multidisciplinary reviews and manage longitudinal patient data. This innovation is currently in the pilot stage of clinical validation, with ongoing evaluations to determine its efficacy in real-world settings.

Dr. Ashok Sharma, a key figure in the project, highlighted the potential of iOncology.ai to address disparities in cancer care across the Global South. At the summit, he emphasized the importance of leveraging BRICS collaboration to bolster cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment through evidence-based and interoperable solutions tailored for emerging economies.

Addressing Global Cancer Challenges

The review, titled “Transforming Cancer Care in Emerging Economies: India’s AI Innovation,” explores the platform's capacity to improve cancer screening and access to specialist care. With BRICS countries accounting for over 40% of the global population and millions of new cancer cases annually, the need for such technology is immense. The review also underscores the disparities in cancer patterns and access to care among these nations.

iOncology.ai is positioned within India's broader digital health and cancer-control framework, encompassing population screening, cancer surveillance, tertiary care, and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. The platform currently utilizes curated clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets from India, with plans to include genetic data and integrate with electronic health record systems.

Future Prospects and Validation

Despite its promising potential, iOncology.ai is still undergoing research-phase validation, with no peer-reviewed evidence yet confirming its diagnostic accuracy or clinical utility. The platform's developers acknowledge the necessity for prospective multicenter validation to ensure reliability before it can be widely adopted in clinical settings.

As iOncology.ai progresses through its development stages, it represents a significant step forward in using AI to tackle cancer care challenges, particularly in resource-constrained environments. By fostering collaboration among BRICS nations, India hopes to advance cancer care innovations that are both practical and equitable.
