An Indian-developed AI platform, iOncology.ai, is gaining international recognition after being featured in a special issue of The BRICS Health Journal during the recent BRICS Summit held on September 12-13. This innovative platform aims to transform cancer care by integrating clinical data to enhance early detection, risk assessment, and treatment planning.
Collaboration Across Institutions
The development of iOncology.ai is a collaborative effort by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune. The project is supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, highlighting the government's commitment to advancing healthcare technology. The platform is designed to utilize clinical, radiological, and histopathological data, with future plans to incorporate genetic information and electronic health records.
Potential Impact on Cancer Care
The platform's review, titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” was authored by Dr. Ashok Sharma and his colleagues. It explores how iOncology.ai could significantly improve cancer screening, early diagnosis, and access to specialized care in emerging economies. Dr. Sharma emphasized the potential of locally developed innovations like iOncology.ai to bridge disparities in cancer care across the Global South.
According to the review, BRICS nations, home to over 40% of the world's population, face approximately 9 million new cancer cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. These statistics underscore the urgent need for enhanced cancer care solutions. The review also highlights the disparities in cancer patterns and the availability of screening and specialist care within these countries.
Current Status and Future Prospects
While iOncology.ai is undergoing pilot-stage clinical validation and implementation evaluation, it has not yet been clinically validated. The platform is currently in research mode, lacking peer-reviewed evidence to establish its diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility. Prospective multicentre validation will be required before it can be widely implemented in clinical settings.
The platform's inclusion in India's expanding digital health infrastructure, including initiatives like the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, reflects its potential to support comprehensive cancer control efforts. By integrating with existing healthcare systems, iOncology.ai aims to empower clinicians, enabling earlier and more equitable cancer care, particularly in resource-limited settings.
