iOncology.ai: Indian AI Platform for Cancer Care Gains Global Recognition

An Indian artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, is making waves in the global health community, gaining recognition at the recent BRICS Summit. This innovative platform, developed collaboratively by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune, with backing from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, is featured in a special issue of The BRICS Health Journal.
Breaking New Ground in Cancer Care
iOncology.ai is designed to revolutionize cancer care by integrating clinical data to aid in early detection, risk stratification, treatment planning, and patient-data management. The technology is currently in the pilot stage, undergoing clinical validation and implementation evaluation. Its potential to enhance cancer screening, early diagnosis, and access to specialist care is being closely examined by researchers, including Dr. Ashok Sharma from AIIMS New Delhi.
The review, titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” highlights how this platform could address disparities in cancer care across the Global South. Dr. Sharma emphasizes the importance of using evidence-based, interoperable solutions tailored to the needs of emerging economies.
Addressing Global Health Challenges
The BRICS nations, which account for over 40% of the global population, face significant challenges in cancer care, with approximately 9 million new cancer cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. The review underscores the stark differences in cancer patterns and access to care among these countries. iOncology.ai is positioned within India’s broader cancer-control strategy, which includes population screening and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.
The platform utilizes curated datasets from Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological sources, with future plans to incorporate genetic data and integrate with electronic health-record systems. However, it is important to note that iOncology.ai has not yet been clinically validated, and further multicentre validation is necessary before it can be widely adopted in clinical settings.

As iOncology.ai continues its journey through clinical evaluations, its proponents are optimistic about its potential to empower clinicians and provide smarter, more equitable cancer care, particularly in resource-limited settings.
