iOncology.ai: Indian AI Platform for Cancer Care Featured in BRICS Health Journal

iOncology.ai, an AI platform developed by AIIMS and C-DAC, gains recognition in BRICS Health Journal for its potential in transforming cancer care in emerging economies.
The Indian artificial intelligence platform iOncology.ai, designed to enhance cancer care, has been featured in the BRICS Health Journal during the recent BRICS Summit. Developed through a collaboration between the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune, with backing from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the platform aims to improve cancer detection and treatment.
Spotlight at the BRICS Summit
The technology's review, titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” was highlighted at the summit held on September 12-13. The review, authored by Ashok Sharma and his team from AIIMS and C-DAC, explores the role of AI in enhancing cancer screening, early diagnosis, and access to specialist care in resource-limited settings.
Dr. Ashok Sharma emphasized the importance of leveraging local innovations like iOncology.ai to address cancer-care disparities across the Global South. He noted the potential of BRICS collaboration to bolster cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment through evidence-based solutions tailored for emerging economies.
Integrating AI in Cancer Care
iOncology.ai is designed to integrate various clinical data types to support early detection, risk stratification, treatment planning, and longitudinal patient-data management. The platform currently undergoes pilot-stage clinical validation to evaluate its performance and applicability in real-world clinical settings.
The review places iOncology.ai within the context of India's growing cancer-control and digital-health infrastructure, including initiatives like population screening and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. The platform utilizes curated Indian datasets, with future plans to incorporate genetic data and electronic health-record systems.
Challenges and Future Prospects
Despite its potential, iOncology.ai is still in the research phase and lacks clinical validation. There is no peer-reviewed evidence yet to establish its diagnostic accuracy or clinical utility. Comprehensive multicentre validation will be necessary before it can be widely adopted in clinical practice.
BRICS nations account for over 40% of the world’s population, with significant cancer incidence and mortality rates. The review underscores the disparities in cancer patterns and access to care within these countries, highlighting the urgent need for innovative solutions like iOncology.ai.
As the platform progresses toward broader clinical implementation, its developers aim to empower clinicians and facilitate more equitable cancer care, particularly in regions with limited resources.
