Dr. Ashok Sharma, a key contributor to the platform's development, highlighted the opportunity for India to bridge cancer-care disparities across the Global South through locally developed innovations like iOncology.ai. The platform is part of a broader effort to strengthen cancer prevention and treatment through evidence-based, interoperable solutions tailored to the needs of emerging economies.

Global Spotlight on Indian Innovation

The review titled "Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation," authored by Ashok Sharma and his team, underscores the potential impact of AI on cancer care within BRICS nations. With these countries accounting for over 40% of the global population and reporting about 9 million new cancer cases annually, the need for improved cancer care is critical.

The platform is currently in the pilot stage of clinical validation and implementation evaluation. Although it has not yet been clinically validated, the ongoing research aims to assess its diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility. Prospective multicentre validation is necessary before it can be widely adopted in clinical settings.

Future Prospects and Challenges

iOncology.ai is poised to become a significant component of India's expanding cancer-control infrastructure, which includes population screening and tertiary care. The platform utilizes curated Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, with plans to incorporate genetic data and integrate with electronic health record systems.

Despite its promising potential, the platform's effectiveness and clinical utility are yet to be established through peer-reviewed evidence. The developers are optimistic that further validation will pave the way for its integration into clinical practice, ultimately leading to smarter and more equitable cancer care, especially in developing regions.
