iOncology.ai: Indian AI Cancer Care Platform Gains Global Attention
iOncology.ai, an AI platform for cancer care by AIIMS and C-DAC, is spotlighted in the BRICS Health Journal.
An innovative Indian artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, designed to enhance cancer care, has been prominently featured in a special issue of the BRICS Health Journal. This recognition coincides with the recent BRICS Summit held from September 12-13, where the platform's potential impact on cancer treatment in emerging economies was discussed.
Indian Innovation in Cancer Care
Developed collaboratively by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune, with backing from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, iOncology.ai represents a significant stride in leveraging AI for healthcare. The platform aims to integrate comprehensive cancer-related clinical data to assist in early detection, risk assessment, treatment planning, and ongoing patient management.
The review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Dr. Ashok Sharma and his team, highlights the transformative potential of AI in enhancing cancer screening, early diagnosis, and access to specialized care. The platform is currently undergoing pilot-stage clinical validation to evaluate its effectiveness and potential application in real-world clinical settings.
BRICS Collaboration and Global Impact
Dr. Sharma emphasized the opportunity for India to showcase iOncology.ai as a tool to bridge cancer-care disparities across the Global South. He noted that BRICS collaboration should focus on enhancing cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment through evidence-based, interoperable solutions tailored for emerging economies. The BRICS countries, which account for over 40% of the global population, face significant cancer-related challenges, with around 9 million new cases and 4.66 million deaths annually.
The review situates iOncology.ai within India's broader cancer-control and digital-health initiatives, including population screening and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. The platform leverages Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, with plans to incorporate genetic data and integrate with electronic health-record systems.
Path Forward for iOncology.ai
Despite its potential, iOncology.ai has not yet been clinically validated, as it remains in the research phase. Prospective multicenter validation studies will be required to establish its diagnostic accuracy, clinical utility, and effectiveness before it can be widely adopted in clinical practice.
The spotlight in the BRICS Health Journal underscores the global interest in India's technological advancements in healthcare, particularly in cancer care. As iOncology.ai progresses through clinical evaluations, it holds promise for transforming cancer care delivery, especially in resource-constrained settings.
