The review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Dr. Ashok Sharma and his team, highlights the transformative potential of AI in enhancing cancer screening, early diagnosis, and access to specialized care. The platform is currently undergoing pilot-stage clinical validation to evaluate its effectiveness and potential application in real-world clinical settings.

BRICS Collaboration and Global Impact

Dr. Sharma emphasized the opportunity for India to showcase iOncology.ai as a tool to bridge cancer-care disparities across the Global South. He noted that BRICS collaboration should focus on enhancing cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment through evidence-based, interoperable solutions tailored for emerging economies. The BRICS countries, which account for over 40% of the global population, face significant cancer-related challenges, with around 9 million new cases and 4.66 million deaths annually.

The review situates iOncology.ai within India's broader cancer-control and digital-health initiatives, including population screening and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. The platform leverages Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, with plans to incorporate genetic data and integrate with electronic health-record systems.

Path Forward for iOncology.ai

Despite its potential, iOncology.ai has not yet been clinically validated, as it remains in the research phase. Prospective multicenter validation studies will be required to establish its diagnostic accuracy, clinical utility, and effectiveness before it can be widely adopted in clinical practice.
