Indian AI Platform iOncology.ai Showcased in BRICS Health Journal

An Indian artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, developed to bolster cancer care, has gained international attention after being featured in a special issue of the BRICS Health Journal. This development coincides with the recent BRICS Summit held on September 12-13, where the journal was unveiled.
The iOncology.ai platform is a collaborative effort between the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune, with backing from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The platform is designed to integrate cancer-related clinical data to aid in early detection, risk assessment, treatment planning, multidisciplinary reviews, and patient data management over time.
Focus on Emerging Economies
A review titled “Transforming Cancer Care in Emerging Economies: India’s AI Innovation,” authored by Ashok Sharma and his team from AIIMS and C-DAC, examines the potential of artificial intelligence to improve cancer screening and diagnosis in resource-limited settings. Currently in the pilot stage, iOncology.ai is undergoing clinical validation and implementation evaluation to determine its effectiveness in real-world clinical settings.
Dr. Ashok Sharma emphasized the opportunity for India to demonstrate how local innovations like iOncology.ai can address cancer care disparities in the Global South. He highlighted the importance of evidence-based, interoperable solutions tailored to the unique needs of emerging economies, advocating for strengthened cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment through BRICS collaboration.
Addressing Global Cancer Challenges
The review underscores the significant global need for improved cancer care, noting that BRICS countries account for over 40% of the world’s population, with approximately 9 million new cancer cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. It also highlights the disparities in cancer patterns and access to care across these nations.
iOncology.ai is positioned within India's expanding digital health infrastructure, including initiatives like population screening, cancer surveillance, and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. The platform utilizes curated Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, with plans to incorporate genetic data and electronic health record systems.
Future Prospects and Challenges
Despite its promising potential, iOncology.ai is not yet clinically validated, as it is still in the research phase. There is no peer-reviewed evidence currently available to confirm its diagnostic accuracy or clinical utility. Prospective multicenter validation is essential before the platform can be widely adopted in clinical practice.
The development of iOncology.ai represents a significant step in leveraging technology to enhance healthcare outcomes in emerging economies, particularly in cancer care. As it progresses through validation and evaluation, its impact on global health disparities remains a key area of focus.
