A review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Ashok Sharma and his team from AIIMS and C-DAC, examines the potential of AI in bolstering cancer screening and diagnosis. The review underscores the platform's ability to address disparities in cancer care, particularly across the Global South.

Addressing Global Cancer Care Disparities

Dr. Ashok Sharma highlighted the opportunity for India to showcase how locally developed solutions like iOncology.ai can bridge cancer-care gaps in resource-limited settings. The platform's development aligns with the goals of the BRICS countries, which collectively represent over 40% of the global population and face significant challenges in cancer diagnosis and treatment.

The review notes that BRICS nations report approximately 9 million new cancer cases and 4.66 million cancer-related deaths annually. There are marked differences in cancer patterns and access to medical care across these countries, making platforms like iOncology.ai crucial for improving outcomes.

Future Prospects and Clinical Validation

iOncology.ai is part of India's broader efforts to enhance cancer control through digital health initiatives, including population screening and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. The platform employs Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, with plans to include genetic data and integrate with electronic health-record systems.

Despite its promising potential, iOncology.ai is still in the research phase and lacks peer-reviewed evidence of its diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility. Comprehensive multicentre validation studies are essential before the platform can be widely adopted in clinical practice.
