Indian AI Platform iOncology.ai Showcased in BRICS Health Journal

An innovative artificial intelligence platform from India, iOncology.ai, has garnered international attention by being featured in a special issue of the BRICS Health Journal. The platform, developed jointly by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune, is designed to enhance cancer care through advanced data integration and analysis.

Platform Development and Goals

iOncology.ai was created with support from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. It aims to streamline cancer-related clinical data, assisting in early detection, risk stratification, treatment planning, and multidisciplinary review. The platform is currently in the pilot stage for clinical validation and implementation evaluation, as it seeks to establish its effectiveness in real-world clinical settings.

Global Health Focus at BRICS Summit

The recent BRICS Summit, held from September 12-13, highlighted the platform as part of a broader initiative to address health disparities in emerging economies. Dr. Ashok Sharma, a key researcher from AIIMS, emphasized the potential of iOncology.ai to bridge cancer care gaps, particularly in resource-limited settings across the Global South. The platform is seen as a potential catalyst for strengthening cancer prevention and treatment through evidence-based, interoperable solutions.

Challenges and Future Prospects

Despite its promise, iOncology.ai is not yet fully clinically validated. It remains in a research phase, lacking peer-reviewed evidence of its diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility. Prospective multicenter validation studies are necessary before it can be widely adopted in clinical practice. The platform's future development plans include incorporating genetic data and integrating with electronic health record systems, which could further enhance its utility.

The BRICS Health Journal review, titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” outlines the significant need for improved cancer care solutions. BRICS nations, which account for over 40% of the global population, face approximately 9 million new cancer cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. The disparities in cancer patterns and access to care underscore the importance of initiatives like iOncology.ai.

With its focus on leveraging curated Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, iOncology.ai is poised to play a crucial role in India's cancer-control strategy, aligning with initiatives such as the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.
