The review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Ashok Sharma and colleagues from AIIMS and C-DAC, explores how AI can enhance cancer screening and diagnosis. It also discusses improving access to specialist care. The review underscores the significance of this innovation in bridging cancer-care disparities, particularly in resource-constrained settings across the Global South.

Dr. Ashok Sharma emphasized the importance of BRICS collaboration in strengthening cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment through AI-driven solutions tailored to the needs of emerging economies. With BRICS countries accounting for over 40% of the global population and facing around 9 million new cancer cases annually, the need for effective cancer care solutions is pressing.

Current Status and Future Prospects

iOncology.ai is currently in the pilot stage of clinical validation and implementation evaluation. It utilizes curated Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, with plans to incorporate genetic data and integrate with electronic health record systems. However, as of now, the platform is still under evaluation in a research mode, with no peer-reviewed evidence yet confirming its diagnostic accuracy or clinical utility.

The platform's potential inclusion in India's growing digital health and cancer-control infrastructure, including initiatives like the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, is also highlighted in the review. Prospective multicenter validation will be necessary before the platform can be widely adopted in clinical settings.
