Indian AI Platform iOncology.ai Gains Spotlight in BRICS Health Journal

iOncology.ai, an AI-driven cancer care platform, is highlighted in the BRICS Health Journal, showcasing India's innovation in addressing cancer disparities.
An Indian artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, has been featured in the BRICS Health Journal during the recent BRICS Summit. Developed collaboratively by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune, with backing from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, iOncology.ai aims to enhance cancer care through data integration and advanced analytics.
BRICS Health Journal Highlights Indian Innovation
The special issue of the BRICS Health Journal, launched during the summit held from September 12-13, includes a comprehensive review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation.” Authored by Ashok Sharma and colleagues from AIIMS and C-DAC, the review explores the potential of artificial intelligence to bolster cancer screening, early diagnosis, and access to specialized care in emerging economies.
iOncology.ai is designed to manage cancer-related clinical data, supporting early detection, risk stratification, treatment planning, and longitudinal patient-data management. Currently in the pilot phase, the platform is undergoing clinical validation and implementation evaluation to determine its efficacy and potential application in real-world settings.
Addressing Cancer Care Disparities
Dr. Ashok Sharma emphasized the platform's role in addressing cancer care disparities, particularly across the Global South. He highlighted the importance of BRICS collaboration in strengthening cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and therapy through evidence-based solutions tailored to the needs of emerging economies.
The review underscores the significance of the platform, noting that BRICS countries account for over 40% of the world’s population, with approximately 9 million new cancer cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. The disparities in cancer patterns and access to care within these nations highlight the urgent need for innovative solutions like iOncology.ai.
Future Prospects and Challenges
Despite its promising potential, iOncology.ai has not yet achieved clinical validation. The platform is still in a research phase, with no peer-reviewed evidence confirming its diagnostic accuracy or clinical utility. Prospective multicentre validation will be necessary before it can be widely adopted in clinical settings.
As part of India’s expanding cancer-control and digital-health infrastructure, iOncology.ai integrates curated Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, with plans to incorporate genetic data and electronic health-record systems. This integration is expected to further enhance the platform's capabilities in providing comprehensive cancer care.
