Indian AI Platform iOncology.ai Gains Spotlight in BRICS Health Journal

An Indian artificial intelligence platform designed to revolutionize cancer care, iOncology.ai, has been prominently featured in the BRICS Health Journal. This development, announced during the BRICS Summit held on September 12-13, underscores India's growing influence in healthcare technology.

Collaboration and Development

The iOncology.ai platform is a collaborative effort between the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune. Supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the platform aims to integrate and utilize clinical data for early cancer detection, risk assessment, treatment planning, and patient data management.

The review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Ashok Sharma and his team, explores the potential of AI to enhance cancer screening and diagnosis in emerging economies. It highlights how such innovations can bridge the gap in cancer care disparities, particularly in the Global South.

Global Implications and Future Prospects

Dr. Ashok Sharma emphasized the opportunity for India to demonstrate the impact of locally developed innovations like iOncology.ai. He advocates for strengthening cancer prevention and treatment through evidence-based, interoperable solutions tailored to emerging economies. This is particularly significant as BRICS nations account for over 40% of the global population, with millions affected by cancer annually.

The platform is part of India's broader efforts to enhance its cancer-control and digital-health infrastructure. It plans to incorporate genetic data and work with electronic health-record systems, further integrating into initiatives like the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.

Current Status and Challenges

While promising, iOncology.ai is still in the pilot phase, undergoing clinical validation to assess its performance and potential clinical applications. Currently, the platform lacks peer-reviewed evidence confirming its diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility. Prospective multicenter trials will be necessary to establish its effectiveness before it can be widely adopted in clinical settings.
