Indian AI Platform Showcased at BRICS Summit
An innovative artificial intelligence platform from India, iOncology.ai, has been highlighted in the BRICS Health Journal during the recent BRICS Summit held on September 12-13. The platform is a joint venture developed by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune, with backing from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
Transforming Cancer Care in Emerging Economies
The platform aims to revolutionize cancer care by integrating clinical data to support early detection, risk assessment, treatment planning, and patient-data management. A review titled “Transforming Cancer Care in Emerging Economies: India’s AI Innovation” by Ashok Sharma and colleagues from AIIMS and C-DAC examines the potential of AI in enhancing cancer screening and diagnosis.
Dr. Ashok Sharma emphasized the opportunity for India to demonstrate how locally developed solutions like iOncology.ai can address healthcare disparities, particularly in the Global South. He highlighted the importance of BRICS collaboration in strengthening cancer prevention and treatment through evidence-based, interoperable solutions tailored to emerging economies.
Current Development and Future Prospects
iOncology.ai is currently in the pilot stage, undergoing clinical validation and implementation evaluation to assess its performance. Despite its promising features, the platform has not yet been clinically validated, and no peer-reviewed evidence has established its diagnostic accuracy or clinical utility. Multicentre validation will be necessary before it can be widely adopted in clinical settings.
Addressing Global Cancer Challenges
The review underscores the pressing need for innovations like iOncology.ai, noting that BRICS countries account for over 40% of the global population and face significant cancer-related challenges, with around 9 million new cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. The platform is positioned within India’s broader cancer-control and digital-health initiatives, including the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.
iOncology.ai utilizes curated Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, and plans to incorporate genetic data and work with electronic health-record systems to enhance its capabilities.
