Indian AI Platform iOncology.ai Gains Spotlight in BRICS Health Journal

An innovative Indian artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, developed to enhance cancer care, has been spotlighted in the BRICS Health Journal. This recognition coincided with the BRICS Summit held from September 12-13, where the platform's capabilities were reviewed in a special issue of the journal.
Collaboration and Development
The platform is a collaborative effort between the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune. Support from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has been crucial in its development. iOncology.ai aims to integrate comprehensive cancer-related clinical data, facilitating early detection, risk stratification, treatment planning, multidisciplinary review, and effective longitudinal patient-data management.
Transforming Cancer Care in Emerging Economies
A detailed review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Ashok Sharma and his team from AIIMS New Delhi and C-DAC Pune, delves into how AI can bolster cancer screening, early diagnosis, and access to specialized care. The review positions iOncology.ai at the forefront of India's expanding digital health and cancer-control initiatives, including population screening and cancer surveillance.
Current Status and Future Prospects
Currently, iOncology.ai is undergoing pilot-stage clinical validation and implementation evaluation to assess its performance in real-world clinical settings. Dr. Ashok Sharma emphasized the opportunity for India to demonstrate how locally developed innovations can bridge gaps in cancer care across the Global South. Through collaboration with BRICS nations, the focus is on enhancing cancer prevention and treatment through evidence-based, interoperable solutions tailored to emerging economies.
Despite its promising potential, iOncology.ai is not yet clinically validated. It is being evaluated in research mode, with further prospective multicentre validation needed before it can be widely implemented in clinical practice. The platform currently utilizes curated Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, with future plans to incorporate genetic data and integrate with electronic health-record systems.
The stakes are high, as BRICS countries collectively account for over 40% of the world's population, facing approximately 9 million new cancer cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. The review underscores significant disparities in cancer patterns and access to care, highlighting the critical need for innovations like iOncology.ai.
