Indian AI Platform iOncology.ai Gains Spotlight in BRICS Health Journal

iOncology.ai, an AI platform for cancer care from India, is featured in the BRICS Health Journal, highlighting its potential to transform cancer treatment in emerging economies.
An innovative Indian artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, designed to enhance cancer care, has been highlighted in the BRICS Health Journal following the BRICS Summit. Developed collaboratively by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune, the platform is supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
Focus on Early Detection and Treatment
The platform aims to integrate cancer-related clinical data to support early detection, risk stratification, treatment planning, multidisciplinary reviews, and longitudinal patient-data management. The review, titled “Transforming Cancer Care in Emerging Economies: India’s AI Innovation,” explores how iOncology.ai could significantly improve cancer screening, early diagnosis, and access to specialist care.
Dr. Ashok Sharma, a key contributor to the review, emphasized the potential of the platform to bridge cancer-care disparities across the Global South. He noted that through BRICS collaboration, the focus should be on strengthening cancer prevention and treatment using evidence-based, interoperable solutions tailored to the needs of emerging economies.
Current Status and Future Prospects
Currently, iOncology.ai is undergoing pilot-stage clinical validation and implementation evaluation. Although it is not yet clinically validated, ongoing research aims to establish its diagnostic accuracy, clinical utility, and effectiveness. Prospective multicenter validation is necessary before it can be widely adopted in clinical settings.
The review highlights the significant need for such innovations, noting that BRICS countries account for over 40% of the world's population, with around 9 million new cancer cases and 4.66 million deaths. The platform's integration within India's expanding cancer-control and digital-health infrastructure, including the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, is seen as a critical step forward.
iOncology.ai utilizes curated Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, with plans to incorporate genetic data and integrate with electronic health-record systems. This approach aims to empower clinicians and enable earlier, smarter, and more equitable cancer care, especially in resource-constrained settings.
