Indian AI Platform iOncology.ai Gains Spotlight in BRICS Health Journal

iOncology.ai, an AI platform for cancer care developed in India, is featured in a BRICS Health Journal review, highlighting its potential impact on global health.
An Indian-developed artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, designed to revolutionize cancer care, has been prominently featured in a special edition of the BRICS Health Journal. This recognition came during the BRICS Summit held from September 12-13, 2026. The platform has been a collaborative effort between the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune, with crucial backing from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
Enhancing Cancer Care Through AI
The iOncology.ai platform aims to integrate a wide array of cancer-related clinical data, facilitating early detection, risk stratification, treatment planning, and comprehensive patient-data management. The review titled, “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Ashok Sharma and his team, delves into how AI can enhance cancer screening, early diagnosis, and specialist care access.
Currently, iOncology.ai is undergoing pilot-stage clinical validation. This phase is critical to evaluate its performance and potential application in clinical environments. Dr. Ashok Sharma emphasized the platform's role in bridging cancer-care disparities across emerging economies, particularly within the Global South. He highlighted the importance of evidence-based, interoperable solutions tailored to these regions' needs.
Significant Impact on BRICS Nations
The BRICS countries, which account for over 40% of the global population, face approximately 9 million new cancer cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. The review underscores the disparities in cancer patterns and access to essential services such as screening and specialist care within these regions.
iOncology.ai is positioned within India's growing cancer-control and digital-health infrastructure, which includes population screening, cancer surveillance, tertiary care, and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. The platform is built on curated Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, with plans to incorporate genetic information and integrate with electronic health record systems.
Future Prospects and Validation
Despite its promising potential, iOncology.ai is still in the research phase and has not yet been clinically validated. There is a lack of peer-reviewed evidence to establish its diagnostic accuracy, clinical utility, or overall effectiveness. Prospective multicentre validation is necessary before it can be widely adopted in clinical settings.
Through ongoing collaborations and research, India aims to showcase how innovations like iOncology.ai can significantly impact cancer care, particularly in resource-limited settings. This development marks a significant step towards smarter, more equitable healthcare solutions for emerging economies.
