Indian AI Platform iOncology.ai Gains Spotlight at BRICS Health Summit

An Indian-developed artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, is gaining international attention as it is featured in the BRICS Health Journal during the recent BRICS Summit. The platform, a collaborative effort between the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune, is supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. It aims to enhance cancer care through integration of clinical data for early detection, risk stratification, and treatment planning.

Focus on Emerging Economies

The review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Ashok Sharma and his team from AIIMS and C-DAC, explores how AI could revolutionize cancer screening and diagnosis, particularly in resource-limited settings. According to Dr. Sharma, the platform presents an opportunity for India to showcase how indigenous innovations can address healthcare disparities in the Global South. He emphasized the importance of BRICS collaboration in strengthening cancer prevention and treatment through interoperable, evidence-based solutions tailored for emerging economies.

Current Status and Future Plans

Currently in the pilot stage of clinical validation, iOncology.ai is under evaluation to determine its effectiveness and potential application in real-world clinical settings. The platform utilizes curated clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets from India, with plans to incorporate genetic data and integrate with electronic health record systems. Despite its promising outlook, the platform is yet to receive clinical validation, and prospective multicenter trials are necessary to establish its diagnostic accuracy and utility.

Addressing Global Cancer Care Challenges

BRICS nations account for over 40% of the global population, with nearly 9 million new cancer cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. The review highlights the disparities in cancer care access and aims to position iOncology.ai as a key component in India's expanding digital health infrastructure, which includes population screening, cancer surveillance, and initiatives like the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.

iOncology.ai's inclusion in the BRICS Health Journal underscores the growing recognition of India's role in developing AI-driven healthcare solutions. As the platform moves towards broader clinical validation, it stands to significantly impact cancer care in emerging economies by providing earlier, smarter, and more equitable treatment options.
