AI Summary

iOncology.ai, developed by AIIMS and C-DAC, features in BRICS Health Journal, showcasing India's AI innovation in cancer care.

The Indian-developed artificial intelligence platform iOncology.ai, designed to enhance cancer care, has been prominently featured in the BRICS Health Journal. This recognition coincides with the recent BRICS Summit held on September 12-13, where the platform's potential to transform cancer treatment in emerging economies was highlighted.

Development and Purpose

iOncology.ai is a collaborative project between the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune. Supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the platform is engineered to integrate various facets of cancer care. It aims to facilitate early detection, risk assessment, treatment planning, and patient data management.

The platform is currently undergoing pilot-stage clinical validation and implementation evaluations. This process is essential to assess its performance and potential application in real-world clinical settings.

Global and Local Implications

Dr. Ashok Sharma, involved in the development of iOncology.ai, emphasized the role of this AI-driven innovation in bridging the cancer-care gap within the Global South. He stated that through BRICS collaboration, the focus should be on enhancing cancer prevention and treatment, particularly in resource-limited environments.

The review in the BRICS Health Journal, titled “Transforming Cancer Care in Emerging Economies: India’s AI Innovation,” underscores the significance of AI in improving cancer screening and early diagnosis. It is noted that BRICS countries account for over 40% of the global population, with significant cancer incidence and mortality rates.

Integration with India's Digital Health Initiatives

iOncology.ai is part of India's broader efforts to expand its cancer control and digital health infrastructure. The platform utilizes curated Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets and plans to incorporate genetic data, thereby aligning with electronic health record systems.

The initiative is also linked to the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, highlighting India's commitment to leveraging digital solutions in healthcare.

Despite its promise, iOncology.ai has yet to achieve clinical validation. It remains in the research phase, with no peer-reviewed evidence currently available to confirm its diagnostic accuracy or clinical utility. Comprehensive multicentre validation studies are required before it can be adopted for broader clinical use.
