It aims to integrate cancer-related clinical data to aid in early detection, risk stratification, treatment planning, and longitudinal patient-data management.

AI-Driven Transformation in Cancer Care

A comprehensive review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Ashok Sharma and his team from AIIMS and C-DAC, outlines the potential of iOncology.ai to significantly improve cancer screening and early diagnosis. The review emphasizes the platform's capacity to improve access to specialist care across the Global South.

Dr. Ashok Sharma highlighted the platform's role in bridging cancer-care disparities in resource-constrained settings through BRICS collaboration. “Our focus should be on strengthening cancer prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, and therapy with evidence-based, interoperable solutions tailored to emerging economies,” he said.

Challenges and Future Prospects

Despite its promise, iOncology.ai is still in the pilot stage, undergoing clinical validation and implementation evaluation. There is no peer-reviewed evidence yet establishing its diagnostic accuracy or clinical utility, and further multicenter validation is needed before it can be widely applied in clinical settings.

The BRICS countries, which represent over 40% of the global population, face significant cancer-related challenges with approximately 9 million new cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. The review notes disparities in cancer patterns and access to care across these nations, underscoring the need for innovative solutions like iOncology.ai.

iOncology.ai is part of India's broader efforts in cancer control and digital health. It plans to incorporate genetic data and work with electronic health-record systems, aligning with initiatives like the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission to enhance healthcare infrastructure.
