Indian AI Platform iOncology.ai Gains Global Spotlight at BRICS Summit

An Indian-developed artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, focused on enhancing cancer care, has been prominently featured in a special issue of the BRICS Health Journal. This recognition was part of the BRICS Summit held on September 12-13, where global leaders convened to discuss health innovations among member nations.
Collaboration Behind iOncology.ai
iOncology.ai is a collaborative effort between the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune. The initiative is supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The platform aims to integrate various aspects of cancer care, including early detection, risk assessment, and treatment planning through advanced data analytics.
The platform's capabilities are designed to address the challenges of cancer care in emerging economies by providing evidence-based, interoperable solutions. It utilizes Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, with future plans to include genetic data integration.
Focus on Bridging Cancer-Care Disparities
The review article, "Transforming Cancer Care in Emerging Economies: India's AI Innovation," authored by Dr. Ashok Sharma and his team, highlights the potential of AI in strengthening cancer screening and early diagnosis. Dr. Sharma emphasizes the opportunity for India to showcase how locally developed technologies like iOncology.ai can help reduce cancer-care disparities, particularly in resource-limited settings.
BRICS countries, which account for over 40% of the global population, face significant cancer-related challenges, with approximately 9 million new cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. The iOncology.ai platform is positioned as a vital component of India's broader cancer-control strategy, which includes initiatives like the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.
Current Status and Future Prospects
Currently, iOncology.ai is in the pilot stage of clinical validation and implementation evaluation. It is being tested to determine its diagnostic accuracy, clinical utility, and effectiveness in real-world settings. Although it shows promise, further multicentre validation is necessary before it can be widely adopted in clinical environments.
The platform's development and the subsequent review in the BRICS Health Journal underscore the potential for AI-driven innovations to transform healthcare delivery in emerging economies. As these technologies continue to evolve, they hold the promise of making cancer care more accessible and equitable across the Global South.
