An innovative Indian artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, designed to enhance cancer care, received international attention at the recent BRICS Summit. The platform's capabilities were highlighted in a special issue of The BRICS Health Journal, inaugurated during the summit held from September 12-13.
Collaboration Behind iOncology.ai
The development of iOncology.ai is spearheaded by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune. The initiative is supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The platform aims to integrate clinical data related to cancer, aiding in early detection, risk stratification, treatment planning, and comprehensive patient-data management.
Dr. Ashok Sharma and his team from AIIMS and C-DAC have authored a review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation.” This review explores the potential of AI to reinforce cancer screening, diagnosis, and access to specialized care.
Current Status and Future Prospects
iOncology.ai is currently undergoing pilot-stage clinical validation. The platform is being evaluated to assess its performance and potential application in real-world clinical settings. Despite its promising capabilities, the platform has yet to achieve clinical validation, with ongoing research to establish its diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility.
Dr. Sharma emphasized the significance of this development for India and other emerging economies. “Through BRICS collaboration, our focus should be on strengthening cancer prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, and therapy through evidence-based, interoperable solutions tailored to the needs of emerging economies,” he stated. He highlighted the platform's potential to bridge disparities in cancer care, particularly in resource-limited settings.
Broader Implications and Challenges
The review underscores the critical need for improved cancer care, noting that BRICS nations represent over 40% of the global population, with approximately 9 million new cancer cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. The disparities in cancer patterns and access to care are significant challenges that iOncology.ai seeks to address.
The platform is part of a broader effort to enhance India's cancer-control and digital-health infrastructure. This includes initiatives like population screening, cancer surveillance, tertiary care, and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. iOncology.ai utilizes curated Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets and plans to integrate genetic data and work with electronic health-record systems.
However, the journey to clinical validation is ongoing. iOncology.ai is still in a research phase, with no peer-reviewed evidence yet confirming its effectiveness. Prospective multicenter validation is necessary before it can be widely adopted in clinical practice.
