Indian AI Platform iOncology.ai Gains Global Spotlight at BRICS Summit

An Indian artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, designed to enhance cancer care, has been featured in the BRICS Health Journal during the recent BRICS Summit. The platform, developed collaboratively by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune, with backing from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, aims to revolutionize cancer treatment in emerging economies.

iOncology.ai's Role in Cancer Care

The AI platform is engineered to integrate various cancer-related clinical data, facilitating early detection, risk assessment, and comprehensive treatment planning. It also supports multidisciplinary reviews and the management of longitudinal patient data. According to a review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Ashok Sharma and his team from AIIMS and C-DAC, the platform holds potential for strengthening cancer screening and diagnosis, particularly in resource-limited settings.

iOncology.ai is currently in the pilot phase of clinical validation and implementation evaluation. This stage is crucial for assessing the platform's performance and potential application in clinical environments. Despite its promise, the platform has not yet undergone peer-reviewed validation to establish its diagnostic accuracy or clinical utility, necessitating further multicentre validation before widespread clinical adoption.

Addressing Cancer Disparities

Dr. Ashok Sharma emphasized the importance of such innovations in bridging cancer-care disparities, particularly across the Global South. He highlighted the opportunity for BRICS collaboration to enhance cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment through evidence-based solutions tailored to the needs of emerging economies. The review notes that BRICS countries represent over 40% of the global population, with millions of new cancer cases and deaths each year, underscoring the need for improved access to care.

iOncology.ai is part of India's broader cancer-control and digital-health initiatives, which include population screening, cancer surveillance, and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. The platform currently utilizes curated Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, with plans to integrate genetic data and electronic health-record systems in the future.

Future Prospects

As iOncology.ai progresses through its validation phases, it represents a significant step towards more equitable cancer care in India and potentially other emerging economies. The platform's development and the attention it has garnered at the BRICS Summit highlight India's growing role in leveraging technology to address critical healthcare challenges.
