Indian AI Platform iOncology.ai Gains Global Attention at BRICS Summit

An Indian artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, developed by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune, is set to receive international recognition. This innovative platform was featured in a special edition of the BRICS Health Journal during the recent BRICS Summit held on September 12-13.
AI-Powered Cancer Care Innovation
Supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, iOncology.ai is designed to integrate various aspects of cancer care, including early detection, risk stratification, treatment planning, and patient data management. The platform aims to enhance cancer screening and diagnosis, thereby improving access to specialist care in resource-limited settings.
The review titled “Transforming Cancer Care in Emerging Economies: India’s AI Innovation,” authored by Ashok Sharma and his team from AIIMS and C-DAC, explores the potential impact of artificial intelligence on improving cancer care across the Global South. The platform's development is seen as a step towards addressing the disparities in cancer care in BRICS nations, which account for over 40% of the world's population and face significant cancer-related challenges.
Implementation and Future Prospects
Currently in the pilot stage, iOncology.ai is undergoing clinical validation to determine its effectiveness and potential application in real-world clinical settings. Dr. Ashok Sharma emphasized the importance of such innovations in bridging the gap in cancer care, particularly in emerging economies. He highlighted the need for evidence-based, interoperable solutions to bolster cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
The review underscores the importance of integrating iOncology.ai with India's broader cancer control and digital health initiatives, such as the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. The platform utilizes curated datasets from various Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological sources, with plans to expand to genetic data and electronic health record systems.
Challenges and Validation
Despite its promising potential, iOncology.ai has not yet been clinically validated. It remains in a research phase with ongoing evaluations to establish its diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility. Prospective multicenter validation will be necessary before the platform can be widely adopted in clinical settings.
