Indian AI Platform iOncology.ai Featured in BRICS Health Journal

iOncology.ai, an AI-driven cancer care platform by AIIMS and C-DAC, gains global recognition at the BRICS Summit.
New Delhi: The Indian artificial intelligence platform iOncology.ai has been spotlighted in a special issue of The BRICS Health Journal, marking a significant milestone for India's healthcare technology. Developed by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune, with backing from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the platform is designed to enhance cancer care through advanced data integration and analysis.
Innovative Approach to Cancer Care
iOncology.ai aims to streamline cancer management by integrating clinical data to assist in early detection, risk assessment, treatment planning, and patient management. The review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” highlights the potential of AI in improving cancer screening, diagnosis, and specialist care access. Authored by Ashok Sharma and colleagues from AIIMS and C-DAC, the paper emphasizes the platform's role in addressing cancer care disparities, particularly in resource-limited settings within the Global South.
Clinical Validation Underway
Currently, iOncology.ai is undergoing pilot-stage clinical validation to evaluate its effectiveness in real-world settings. Although the platform shows promise, it is still in the research phase, with no peer-reviewed evidence yet confirming its diagnostic accuracy or clinical utility. Prospective multicentre validation studies are necessary before it can be adopted widely in clinical practices.
Addressing Global Health Challenges
Dr. Ashok Sharma, in discussions with media, noted that India's innovation in AI like iOncology.ai could play a vital role in bridging the healthcare gap in BRICS countries, which collectively account for over 40% of the global population. These nations face approximately 9 million new cancer cases and 4.66 million cancer-related deaths annually, highlighting the urgent need for effective solutions. The BRICS collaboration could focus on enhancing cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment through tailored, evidence-based strategies.
The platform's integration into India’s broader cancer-control and digital-health initiatives, including the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, signifies its potential impact on national health infrastructure. Future plans for iOncology.ai include incorporating genetic data and synchronizing with electronic health records to further enhance its capabilities.
