An Indian artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, designed to revolutionize cancer care, has been highlighted in the BRICS Health Journal. This recognition comes as part of the BRICS Summit held from September 12-13, where global health leaders gathered to discuss innovations in healthcare.
Development and Collaboration
iOncology.ai is the brainchild of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune. The initiative is supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, aiming to integrate clinical data for cancer care, focusing on early detection, risk stratification, and treatment planning.
Dr. Ashok Sharma from AIIMS emphasized the potential of iOncology.ai to bridge cancer-care gaps in emerging economies, particularly within the Global South. He highlighted the need for BRICS collaboration to enhance cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment through evidence-based solutions.
Clinical Evaluation and Future Prospects
The platform is currently undergoing pilot-stage clinical validation to assess its effectiveness in real-world settings. Although not yet clinically validated, iOncology.ai uses curated Indian datasets and plans to incorporate genetic data and electronic health-record systems. Dr. Sharma noted that prospective multicentre validation is essential before the platform can be widely adopted in clinical environments.
The review in the BRICS Health Journal, titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” explores how AI can enhance cancer screening and diagnosis, particularly in BRICS countries, which account for over 40% of the global population. These nations face challenges with cancer patterns and access to care, making innovations like iOncology.ai crucial.
Integration with National Health Initiatives
iOncology.ai aligns with India's broader digital health initiatives, including the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, which aims to improve healthcare access and quality. The platform's integration with national health infrastructure is expected to support population screening, cancer surveillance, and tertiary care.
