An Indian artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, developed by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune, has been spotlighted in the BRICS Health Journal. The feature coincides with the BRICS Summit held on September 12-13, where the platform's potential to revolutionize cancer care was highlighted.
AI-Driven Cancer Care
iOncology.ai is engineered to enhance cancer care by integrating clinical data pertinent to cancer, facilitating early detection, risk assessment, treatment planning, and longitudinal patient management. The initiative is backed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, reflecting India's commitment to leveraging technology for healthcare improvements.
The journal article, titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Ashok Sharma and his team from AIIMS and C-DAC, explores how AI technologies could bolster cancer screening, early diagnosis, and access to specialized care, especially in resource-limited settings.
Global and Local Impact
Dr. Ashok Sharma emphasized the importance of this development at the BRICS collaboration, noting that the platform could play a crucial role in addressing cancer care disparities across the Global South. He stressed the need for evidence-based, interoperable solutions tailored to the unique needs of emerging economies.
BRICS countries, accounting for over 40% of the world's population, face significant cancer-related challenges, with approximately 9 million new cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. The review highlights disparities in cancer incidence and access to care, underscoring the platform's potential impact.
Current Status and Future Prospects
iOncology.ai is currently in the pilot stage of clinical validation, undergoing performance assessments to determine its applicability in clinical settings. Despite its promising prospects, the platform is yet to achieve clinical validation, with no peer-reviewed studies confirming its diagnostic accuracy or clinical utility.
The developers plan to expand its capabilities by incorporating genetic data and integrating with electronic health record systems. Prospective multicenter validation is essential before it can be adopted for widespread clinical use.
The platform's development aligns with India's broader cancer control and digital health initiatives, such as population screening and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, aiming to enhance healthcare delivery through technological advancements.
