In an article titled “Transforming Cancer Care in Emerging Economies: India’s AI Innovation,” researchers Ashok Sharma and colleagues from AIIMS and C-DAC discuss the potential of AI to enhance cancer screening and improve access to specialist care in emerging economies. The focus is on using evidence-based, interoperable solutions to address disparities in cancer care, particularly in resource-limited settings.

Clinical Validation and Future Prospects

iOncology.ai is currently undergoing pilot-stage clinical validation and evaluation to establish its performance and utility in real-world clinical settings. Dr. Ashok Sharma highlighted the potential of such innovations to bridge cancer-care gaps across the Global South, emphasizing the importance of BRICS collaboration in strengthening cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

The BRICS countries account for over 40% of the world’s population, with approximately 9 million new cancer cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. The review points to wide disparities in cancer patterns and access to early diagnosis and specialist care, underscoring the significance of platforms like iOncology.ai.

Integration with India's Health Infrastructure

iOncology.ai is a part of India’s broader cancer-control and digital-health initiatives, which include population screening, cancer surveillance, tertiary care, and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. The platform employs curated Indian datasets, including clinical, radiological, and histopathological information, with future plans to incorporate genetic data and electronic health records.

Despite its promising potential, iOncology.ai has not yet been clinically validated. It remains in research mode, lacking peer-reviewed evidence for its diagnostic accuracy and clinical effectiveness. Prospective multicenter validation is required before it can be widely adopted in clinical settings.
