An Indian-developed artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, designed to enhance cancer care, has been featured in the BRICS Health Journal during the recent BRICS Summit. The platform is a collaborative effort by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune, with backing from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
AI-Driven Innovation in Cancer Care
iOncology.ai aims to revolutionize cancer care by integrating clinical data to assist in early detection, risk assessment, treatment planning, and long-term patient data management. The journal review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Ashok Sharma and colleagues, explores the platform's potential impact on cancer screening, diagnosis, and access to specialized care.
The platform is currently in the pilot stage, undergoing clinical validation to assess its effectiveness in real-world settings. Dr. Ashok Sharma emphasized the opportunity for India to showcase how indigenous innovations like iOncology.ai can address cancer care disparities, particularly in resource-limited regions.
BRICS Collaboration and Global Health Impact
The BRICS nations, collectively accounting for over 40% of the global population, face significant cancer challenges with around 9 million new cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. The review highlights the diverse cancer patterns and the varying levels of access to healthcare across these countries.
iOncology.ai is positioned within India’s growing digital health framework, including initiatives like the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. The platform utilizes curated Indian clinical datasets and plans to incorporate genetic information to enhance its capabilities further.

Despite its promising potential, iOncology.ai is yet to achieve clinical validation. It is currently under evaluation in a research setting, with further multicenter studies required to establish its diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility.
