An Indian-developed artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, has been spotlighted in the BRICS Health Journal, coinciding with the BRICS Summit held on September 12-13. The platform, a collaborative effort between the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune, with backing from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, aims to enhance cancer care in emerging economies.
AI-Driven Cancer Care Innovation
The special issue of the journal features a comprehensive review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Ashok Sharma and his team from AIIMS and C-DAC. This review discusses the potential of iOncology.ai to revolutionize cancer screening, early diagnosis, and access to specialist care in regions with limited resources. The platform is designed to integrate cancer-related clinical data, supporting early detection, risk stratification, treatment planning, and patient-data management.
Currently in the pilot phase, iOncology.ai is undergoing clinical validation and implementation evaluation. Dr. Ashok Sharma expressed optimism about the platform's ability to bridge cancer-care disparities across the Global South, emphasizing the importance of evidence-based, interoperable solutions tailored to the needs of emerging economies.
Addressing Cancer Challenges in BRICS Nations
The review highlights the significant cancer burden within BRICS countries, which together account for over 40% of the global population and report approximately 9 million new cancer cases annually. The disparities in cancer patterns and access to care underscore the urgent need for innovative solutions like iOncology.ai.
Placing iOncology.ai within India’s expanding digital health infrastructure, the review notes its alignment with initiatives such as population screening, cancer surveillance, tertiary care, and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. The platform utilizes curated Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, with plans to incorporate genetic data and integrate with electronic health record systems.
Future Prospects and Validation
Despite its potential, iOncology.ai has not yet been clinically validated. It remains in research mode, lacking peer-reviewed evidence of its diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility. Prospective multicenter validation studies will be essential before it can be adopted widely in clinical settings.
Dr. Sharma underscores the opportunity for India to lead in cancer care innovation through BRICS collaboration, focusing on prevention, early diagnosis, and equitable treatment.
