Indian AI Platform for Cancer Care Gains Spotlight in BRICS Health Journal

iOncology.ai, an innovative artificial intelligence platform developed by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune, is set to make waves in the global health community. The platform was prominently featured in a special issue of the BRICS Health Journal, unveiled during the recent BRICS Summit held on September 12-13.
Transforming Cancer Care Through AI
The platform, backed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, is designed to integrate various cancer-related clinical data. It aims to support early detection, risk stratification, treatment planning, multidisciplinary review, and longitudinal patient-data management. The review, titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” was authored by Ashok Sharma and colleagues from AIIMS and C-DAC.
The review highlighted how iOncology.ai could play a vital role in enhancing cancer screening, early diagnosis, and access to specialist care, particularly in resource-limited settings. Dr. Ashok Sharma emphasized that India, through BRICS collaboration, has the chance to bridge cancer-care disparities across the Global South using locally developed innovations like iOncology.ai.
Addressing Cancer Care Disparities
The need for such innovations is critical. BRICS countries account for over 40% of the global population, with approximately 9 million new cancer cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. The review underscored the significant disparities in cancer patterns and access to essential services like screening and specialist care within these nations.
iOncology.ai is part of a broader strategy to enhance India’s cancer-control and digital-health infrastructure. This includes initiatives like population screening, cancer surveillance, tertiary care, and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. The platform currently employs curated Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, with future plans to incorporate genetic data and integrate with electronic health-record systems.
Clinical Validation and Future Prospects
Despite its promising potential, iOncology.ai is still in the pilot-stage clinical validation and implementation evaluation phase. It is being assessed in research mode without peer-reviewed evidence yet establishing its diagnostic accuracy or clinical utility. Prospective multicenter validation is essential before the platform can be widely adopted in clinical settings.
Dr. Sharma expressed optimism that iOncology.ai would empower clinicians to deliver earlier, more informed, and equitable cancer care. As the platform progresses through its validation phases, it could represent a significant step forward in addressing cancer-care challenges in emerging economies.
