Indian AI Platform for Cancer Care Gains Spotlight at BRICS Health Summit

The Indian AI platform iOncology.ai, developed to enhance cancer care, was prominently featured in the BRICS Health Journal during the recent BRICS Summit held on September 12-13. This innovative platform is a collaborative effort between the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune, with financial backing from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
Focus on Early Detection and Treatment
iOncology.ai is designed to integrate and analyze cancer-related clinical data, offering support for early detection, risk stratification, treatment planning, and comprehensive patient data management. The review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation” highlights the potential of artificial intelligence to improve cancer screening, early diagnosis, and accessibility to specialist care in emerging economies.
Dr. Ashok Sharma, a key contributor to the platform, emphasized India's potential to reduce cancer-care disparities across the Global South through innovations like iOncology.ai. He advocates for BRICS collaboration to enhance cancer prevention and treatment through interoperable solutions tailored to the needs of these regions.
Ongoing Validation and Future Prospects
Currently in the pilot stage, iOncology.ai is undergoing clinical validation to evaluate its effectiveness in real-world settings. The platform's integration with India's digital health infrastructure, including the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, aims to bolster cancer surveillance and care. While the platform leverages curated Indian clinical datasets, plans are underway to incorporate genetic data and electronic health record systems.
Despite its promising potential, iOncology.ai has yet to achieve clinical validation, with no peer-reviewed studies confirming its diagnostic accuracy or clinical utility. Multicenter validation studies are essential before the platform can be widely adopted in clinical practice.
The review notes that BRICS countries, accounting for over 40% of the global population, face significant challenges in cancer care, with approximately 9 million new cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. Disparities in cancer patterns and access to care underscore the urgent need for innovative solutions like iOncology.ai to address these issues.
