Dr. Ashok Sharma, one of the lead researchers from AIIMS, emphasized the importance of such innovations in addressing cancer-care disparities across the Global South. He highlighted the platform's role in enhancing cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment through BRICS collaboration.

Current Validation and Future Prospects

Currently, iOncology.ai is in the pilot stage of clinical validation and implementation evaluation. It is being tested for performance and potential clinical applications, but it has not yet been clinically validated. The platform's diagnostic accuracy, clinical utility, and effectiveness are still under research, with plans for prospective multicentre validation before broader clinical deployment.

The review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Ashok Sharma and his team, underscores the significance of this technological advancement. It places iOncology.ai within India's growing cancer-control infrastructure, including screening, surveillance, and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.

Challenges and Opportunities

The need for such a platform is underscored by the staggering cancer statistics within BRICS nations, which account for over 40% of the global population and report approximately 9 million new cancer cases annually. The review also points out the disparities in cancer patterns and access to care across these countries.

Looking ahead, the platform plans to incorporate genetic data and work with electronic health record systems, further enhancing its capability to provide comprehensive cancer care solutions.
