India's AI-driven cancer care platform, iOncology.ai, gains international attention in BRICS Health Journal.
An Indian artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, is receiving international recognition after being featured in a special issue of the BRICS Health Journal, launched during the recent BRICS Summit held on September 12-13. Developed collaboratively by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune, the platform is supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
Innovative Approach to Cancer Care
iOncology.ai is designed to revolutionize cancer care by integrating clinical data to aid in early detection, risk assessment, treatment planning, and patient data management. The platform aims to address the challenges of cancer care in resource-limited settings, particularly within the BRICS countries, which represent over 40% of the global population and account for significant cancer incidence and mortality rates.
The review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Dr. Ashok Sharma and colleagues from AIIMS and C-DAC, outlines the potential of AI in enhancing cancer screening, early diagnosis, and access to specialist care. Dr. Sharma emphasized the opportunity for India to demonstrate the impact of locally developed technologies in reducing cancer care disparities across developing nations.
Current Validation and Future Prospects
Currently, iOncology.ai is undergoing pilot-stage clinical validation to evaluate its performance and applicability in clinical environments. Despite its promising design, the platform has yet to achieve clinical validation, with peer-reviewed evidence still pending to confirm its diagnostic accuracy and clinical effectiveness. Multicentre validation studies are planned to ensure broader clinical application.
The platform is part of India's broader cancer-control strategy, which includes population screening, cancer surveillance, and integration with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. It utilizes curated Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, with plans to incorporate genetic data and electronic health record systems.

As the BRICS nations face diverse cancer patterns and disparities in access to care, the iOncology.ai platform represents a significant step forward in utilizing technology to improve health outcomes.
