Indian AI Cancer Platform iOncology.ai Shines at BRICS Summit

iOncology.ai, an AI-driven platform from India, gains recognition at the BRICS Summit, showcasing advancements in cancer care.
The Indian artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, designed to enhance cancer care, has captured international attention by being featured in a special issue of the BRICS Health Journal. The technology, developed by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Pune, was highlighted during the BRICS Summit held on September 12-13.
AIIMS and C-DAC's Collaborative Effort
Supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, iOncology.ai aims to integrate comprehensive cancer-related clinical data. The platform supports early detection, risk stratification, treatment planning, multidisciplinary reviews, and longitudinal patient data management. This initiative is part of India's expanding digital health infrastructure, including the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.
Focus on Emerging Economies
A review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Ashok Sharma and colleagues from AIIMS and C-DAC, delves into the potential of AI to enhance cancer screening and diagnosis. Dr. Sharma emphasized the opportunity for India to demonstrate how innovations like iOncology.ai can address cancer-care disparities globally, particularly in resource-constrained settings.
BRICS countries, which represent over 40% of the world's population, face significant cancer-related challenges, with approximately 9 million new cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. These nations experience varied cancer patterns and disparities in access to screening and specialist care, making the platform's potential impact noteworthy.
Current Validation and Future Prospects
Currently, iOncology.ai is undergoing pilot-stage clinical validation to assess its performance and potential clinical use. The platform utilizes curated Indian datasets and plans to incorporate genetic data and electronic health record systems. However, it is still in research mode, with no peer-reviewed evidence yet confirming its diagnostic accuracy or clinical utility. Prospective multicentre validation is necessary before broader clinical application.
The review positions iOncology.ai as a significant component of India’s efforts to improve cancer control through digital health solutions, highlighting the platform's alignment with national health initiatives and its potential to transform cancer care in emerging economies.
