An Indian artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, designed to enhance cancer care, has been featured in the BRICS Health Journal. The platform's review was presented at the BRICS Summit, emphasizing its potential to transform cancer care in emerging economies.
Development and Objectives
The platform is a collaborative effort between the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune, supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. It aims to integrate clinical data for early detection, risk stratification, treatment planning, and ongoing patient management.
According to Dr. Ashok Sharma from AIIMS, who contributed to the review, iOncology.ai represents an opportunity for India to address cancer-care disparities, especially in resource-limited settings. The platform is part of a broader effort to bolster cancer prevention and treatment through evidence-based, interoperable solutions tailored to the needs of developing regions.
Clinical Validation and Future Prospects
Currently, iOncology.ai is undergoing pilot-stage clinical validation and evaluation. While there is no peer-reviewed evidence yet regarding its diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility, prospective multicentre validation is planned before any wide-scale clinical application.
The review highlights that BRICS countries, which account for over 40% of the global population, face significant challenges in cancer care, with around 9 million new cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. iOncology.ai is positioned within India's expanding cancer-control framework, which includes initiatives like the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission.
The platform leverages curated datasets from Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological sources, with future plans to incorporate genetic data and interface with electronic health records. Dr. Sharma emphasizes that the collaborative efforts through BRICS could significantly enhance cancer care accessibility and quality in emerging economies.
