Indian AI Cancer Platform iOncology.ai Gains Global Spotlight at BRICS Summit
iOncology.ai, an Indian AI platform for cancer care, is featured in BRICS Health Journal, highlighting its potential to transform cancer treatment in emerging economies.
An Indian artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, designed to enhance cancer care, has been prominently featured in the BRICS Health Journal. The review was unveiled at the BRICS Summit held from September 12-13, spotlighting India's innovative strides in healthcare technology.
Collaboration for Advanced Cancer Care
Developed collaboratively by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune, iOncology.ai benefits from support by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The platform aims to integrate comprehensive cancer-related clinical data, facilitating early detection, risk stratification, and treatment planning.
Dr. Ashok Sharma from AIIMS emphasized the platform's potential to reduce cancer-care disparities in the Global South. “Through BRICS collaboration, our focus should be on strengthening cancer prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, and therapy through evidence-based, interoperable solutions tailored to the needs of emerging economies,” Sharma explained.
Focus on Emerging Economies
The BRICS countries, which account for over 40% of the global population, face significant challenges with approximately 9 million new cancer cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. The review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation” explores the platform's potential to improve access to screening and specialist care.
iOncology.ai is currently in the pilot stage of clinical validation, where its performance and potential utility in clinical environments are being assessed. Although not yet clinically validated, the platform is undergoing evaluation in research mode. Prospective multicentre validation will be necessary before it can be widely adopted in clinical settings.
Integration with India's Digital Health Infrastructure
The platform is set to align with India's growing digital health infrastructure, including initiatives like the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. iOncology.ai utilizes curated Indian datasets and plans to incorporate genetic data and electronic health records, further enhancing its capabilities.
The inclusion of iOncology.ai in the BRICS Health Journal underscores India's leadership in leveraging AI for healthcare advancements. As the platform progresses towards wider clinical validation, it holds promise for transforming cancer care across resource-constrained settings globally.
