Indian AI Cancer Platform iOncology.ai Gains Global Attention at BRICS Summit

iOncology.ai, an AI-driven cancer care platform by AIIMS and C-DAC, is spotlighted in the BRICS Health Journal for its role in enhancing cancer treatment.
An Indian artificial intelligence platform, iOncology.ai, designed to revolutionize cancer care, has captured international attention by being featured in a special issue of the BRICS Health Journal. This recognition took place during the BRICS Summit held on September 12-13, where dignitaries highlighted the platform's potential impact on cancer treatment within emerging economies.
Developed collaboratively by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Pune, with backing from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, iOncology.ai aims to integrate comprehensive cancer-related clinical data. Its functionalities include early detection, risk stratification, treatment planning, and management of longitudinal patient data.
Transforming Cancer Care in Emerging Economies
The platform’s potential was outlined in a review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Ashok Sharma and his team from AIIMS and C-DAC. The review discusses how artificial intelligence can enhance cancer screening, early diagnosis, and access to specialized care, particularly in resource-limited settings.
Dr. Ashok Sharma emphasized India's opportunity to showcase how locally developed innovations like iOncology.ai can address disparities in cancer care across the Global South. He highlighted the importance of BRICS collaboration in strengthening cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment through evidence-based solutions tailored for emerging economies.
Current Validation and Future Prospects
Currently in the pilot stage, iOncology.ai is undergoing clinical validation and implementation evaluation to determine its effectiveness in real-world settings. Although it shows promise, the platform has not yet been clinically validated, and no peer-reviewed studies have confirmed its diagnostic accuracy or clinical utility. Future multicentre validation efforts are necessary before it can be widely adopted in clinical environments.
The review also places iOncology.ai within the broader context of India's cancer-control initiatives and digital health infrastructure, including population screening and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. By leveraging curated Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, there are plans to incorporate genetic data and integrate with electronic health-record systems to enhance its capabilities.
With BRICS countries accounting for over 40% of the global population and facing significant cancer-related challenges, platforms like iOncology.ai are critical in bridging gaps in cancer care. The review underscores the disparities in cancer patterns and access to care, emphasizing the need for innovative solutions in these regions.
