The review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Ashok Sharma and colleagues, examines the potential of AI in enhancing cancer screening, diagnosis, and specialist care access. Dr. Sharma emphasized the opportunity for India to use this platform to reduce cancer care disparities across the Global South, advocating for evidence-based, interoperable solutions tailored to emerging economies.

BRICS Health Journal Spotlight

The BRICS countries, accounting for over 40% of the world's population, face significant cancer challenges, with approximately 9 million new cases and 4.66 million deaths annually. The review highlights disparities in cancer patterns and access to early diagnosis and specialist care within these nations.

iOncology.ai is positioned within India's expanding cancer-control and digital-health framework, which includes population screening, cancer surveillance, and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. The platform utilizes curated clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, with plans to incorporate genetic data and integrate with electronic health records.

Future Prospects and Challenges

Despite its promising potential, iOncology.ai has yet to undergo comprehensive clinical validation. It is currently in a research phase, with no peer-reviewed evidence confirming its diagnostic accuracy or clinical effectiveness. Prospective multicentre validation studies are necessary before it can be widely adopted in clinical practice.

Dr. Sharma highlighted the project's focus on empowering clinicians and enabling smarter, more equitable cancer care, particularly in resource-limited settings. Through BRICS collaboration, the aim is to strengthen cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment strategies.
