The iOncology.ai platform aims to integrate cancer-related clinical data to aid in early detection, risk stratification, treatment planning, and longitudinal patient-data management. It is currently undergoing clinical validation and implementation evaluation to determine its effectiveness in real-world settings.

A review titled “Transforming cancer care in emerging economies: India’s AI innovation,” authored by Ashok Sharma and colleagues from AIIMS and C-DAC, highlights the potential of artificial intelligence to enhance cancer screening, early diagnosis, and access to specialist care. This review was launched during the BRICS Summit held from September 12-13.

Targeting Global Health Disparities

Dr. Ashok Sharma emphasized the opportunity for India to demonstrate how innovations like iOncology.ai can address disparities in cancer care, particularly in the Global South. He pointed out that BRICS countries account for over 40% of the global population, with approximately 9 million new cancer cases and 4.66 million deaths. The need for improved cancer care is underscored by significant differences in cancer patterns and access to healthcare services across these nations.

The platform is part of India’s broader cancer-control and digital-health strategy, which includes population screening, surveillance, tertiary care, and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. iOncology.ai leverages curated Indian clinical, radiological, and histopathological datasets, and plans are underway to incorporate genetic data and integrate with electronic health-record systems.

Future Prospects and Challenges

Despite the promise, iOncology.ai is still in the research phase without peer-reviewed evidence confirming its diagnostic accuracy or clinical utility. Prospective multicenter validation is necessary before it can be widely adopted in clinical settings. Nonetheless, the platform’s development marks a significant step toward using AI to bridge healthcare gaps in emerging economies.

Through collaborative efforts within BRICS, the focus remains on enhancing cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment through evidence-based, interoperable solutions tailored to meet the needs of resource-constrained settings.
